Two quick observations:
ANIMATED FEATURE FILM: * How to Train Your Dragon * The Illusionist * Toy Story 3 Kind of shocked not to see "Despicable Me" on the nominations list, given the amount of love that film got by the general public and critics, Personally I thought it was cute in places but not really the be all, end all that most made it out to be. * Madagascar, carnet de voyage (Madagascar, a Journey Diary) I think it's safe to assume, that this film has absolutely nothing to do with the Dreamworks series of the same name.

The Oscars has come and gone for another year, and here are this year's winners:
BEST PICTURE: * The King's Speech DIRECTING: * The King's Speech (Tom Hooper) ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE: * Colin Firth (The King's Speech) ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE: * Natalie Portman (Black Swan) ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE: * Christian Bale (The Fighter) ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE: * Melissa Leo (The Fighter) ADAPTED SCREENPLAY: * The Social Network (Aaron Sorkin) ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: * The King's Speech (David Seidler) FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM: * In a Better World (Denmark) ANIMATED FEATURE FILM: * Toy Story 3 ART DIRECTION: * Alice in Wonderland CINEMATOGRAPHY: * Inception (Wally Pfister) COSTUME DESIGN: * Alice in Wonderland DOCUMENTARY FEATURE: * Inside Job FILM EDITING: * The Social Network MAKEUP: * The Wolfman ORIGINAL SCORE: * The Social Network (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross) (Up yours Trent and Atticus! ) ORIGINAL SONG: * We Belong Together (Toy Story 3) SOUND MIXING: * Inception SOUND EDITING: * Inception VISUAL EFFECTS: * Inception DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT: * Strangers No More ANIMATED SHORT FILM: * The Lost Thing LIVE ACTION SHORT FILM: * God of Love While I am saddened that Toy Story 3 didn't win Best Picture, I'm at least happy that The Social Network did not win. The King's Speech seems to be this year's Frost/Nixon for me. Cass, I hope it's enough for you to not lose faith in the Academy, even if you already have.

The Academy is biased against anything that is animated, funny, or sci-fi, isn't dramatic, or fails to make an "artistic statement", whatever the hell that means. Toy Story 3 did get Best Animated Feature, which I can live with (although it deserved more). Of more interest to me than the actual awards is the bit where Best Supporting Actress winner Melissa Leo, live on stage, dropped the first F-bomb in Academy history.

Judging by the results it seemed the Academy decided to play it safe with it's choices, pretty much picking what the experts expected them to pick.
Next year's best Animated race is going to be interesting though as Pixar's 2011 offering is the sequel to Cars which was their last movie to not take home the award. Which could make the playing field a little more open.

What really surprised me was Tom Hooper winning Best Director, only because I was totally expecting David Fincher to get it. But like I said, as long as The Social Network didn't win Best Picture, I was happy.
