back when the game first began nobody said where anything/anyone was. it has only been the more recent updates that they actually tell you where to look for things.

So if you are given a task and not a location always start from the first floor and search every room then advance upwards until you find it.

Also searching the threads in this forum would not hurt too much.

For example, Eduardo once asked me to find his rubber duckie, but he mentioned leaving it behind in a bathroom that he couldn't remember, so I only needed to check the bathrooms.
