Quick Question on Adoption
So I just watched the Adoptcalypse episode and I came to wonder something. Can the main group of friends be adopted? I mean I'm not suggesting nor would I ever want Wilt, Eduardo, or Coco to leave but the question is that maybe in another episode it was answered if they would or could ever get adopted, in an episode I haven't seen, as I haven't seen too many episodes. I figured that somewhere along the line due to their service to the house they were permanent residents but please correct me if I'm wrong. Anyway thanks for the responses.

In Good Wilt Hunting Wilt said that he wanted to be adopted (not his exact words but I'm SURE I'll be corrected) so I assume the members of the main group other than Bloo are adoptable. I can't see why they wouldn't be adoptable, nor can I see why anyone wouldn't want one of them.

That's what I couldn't understand. Why would they not be adopted if it was possible to do so, they are so awesome that I know if I had my choice I'd love to adopt Wilt, Eduardo or Coco. And would certainly do so before I adopted others, just my preference. Anyway that's interesting and thanks for the answer.

On another forum, TV.com, I believe, if my memory serves me correctly, Lauren Faust stated the reasons why no one has adopted Wilt, Eduardo, or Coco. Most children(and probably a lot of parents)can't see past Wilt's missing arm and messed-up, blind eye; to them, he's like a broken, useless toy, either that or they're a little bit creeped out by his appearance. His response to Mac and Bloo staring at him in the pilot indicates that he's gotten a negative reaction to his appearance many, many times. Also, in spite of what he told Jordan on the flight back to Foster's, Wilt seems to have gone out of his way NOT to be adopted, and instead tends to put the happiness of other Imaginary Friends before his. In "World Wide Wabbit", for example, he states on camera that there are lots of Friends more deserving of adoption than he is. Eduardo, due to his size and his tendency towards panic attacks, is like the proverbial "bull in a China shop"(her words, so I don't know whether that was a pun or not), and because of that, even if he DID get adopted, the new family would bring him right back as soon as he wrecked their home after encountering a spider or something! And Coco...well, most folks think she's crazy, too unpredictable. At that time-and keep in mind this was at least three years ago-Lauren said that those three main IF's would always remain at Foster's, and would never be adopted, but at that same time, she also said that they would never reveal what had actually happened to Wilt's arm and eye, or that they'd have any romantic relationships on the show, or that they'd make episodes that were "dated", in other words, occurred within a particular time sequence, yet since then, they've done all three, so who knows? Maybe the show's finale will have all three being adopted, though to be honest, I'm very ambivalent about that. I'd love for all three to be happy, but I'd also like to know that they will always have a secure home there at Foster's, where they'll always be appreciated. pitbulllady Last edited by pitbulllady; 04-15-2008 at 11:06 AM. |

I do agree that Wilt, Ed and Coco would each make stellar imaginary companions, but I'm sure that an awful lot of us would miss them if they disappeared from Foster's (and adoption would mean removing them from the show's central setting, which would certainly shake things up a bit). I'd say that it's potential subject matter for the final episode, but until then, I don't know, I have this hunch that all of our favourite friends are going to be sticking around where we can see them.
EDIT: Note that none of the recurring background characters - Jackie Khones, Fluffer Nutter, Bloppy Pants, etc, ever seem to get adopted either. While there may well be individual reasons, within the context of the show, why potential adopters should find them less appealling than others, all in all I'd say that it's simply more convenient, for the purposes of character and continuity, for them to remain.

I always wondered about this too, but simply accepted that it's a TV show, and for the sake of the show (and likely the fans) there was just little chance any of the main characters would be adopted, at least not long term. I could see an episode centered around the adoption of one of the leading friends (probably ending with the friend back at the house for some reason or other). And frankly, am kind of surprised there hasn't been an episode like that, with the exception I suppose of "Emancipation Complication". But that wasn't what I had in mind. Anyway, all this clarification is quite enlightening, and makes sense. Maybe it's not just because it's a TV show.
As for the background friends, most of them we see only every few episodes. It's been my theory that some of them have been adopted, and that's why we don't see them for many episodes at a time. When they return to the "background", they're just back at the house. Heh, just my theory though.

I realized that it would never happen due to the continuity issues in the show. But I didn't know if it was merely a convenence of the show, or whether there was something larger going on.

I'm glad none got adopted. It would have made the show different.
