Saw Silence on demand and just got finished watching Transformers on DVD. God I FREAKING LOVE Transformers!!! This movie truly wowed me on almost every level and so many people doubted how the movie would turn out. Regardless of what anyone still says, I still say it was a phenomenal film.

You start to understand that he's not a writer for the common man because he wants to be, he's only says that because he doesn't have the skill to be what most people would call a real writer. So when he's finally told off, all though it's said in the harshest of ways you can't help but agree with what's being said.

Barton Fink was one of those movies that was okay when I watched it, but after thinking about it for a day it was one of the greatest movies I've ever seen. The thing is it's such a painful experience in a way that I can't watch it again and again unlike the lighter dark comedy in Brazil.

Barton Fink is a fantastic movie...too bad it doesn't receive the same attention that other Coen Bros flicks like Fargo and the Big Lebowski are currently enjoying. I've seen it many, many, many a time (personally, I can watch it repeatedly, because although it's a decidedly dark and chilling experience, it's also very fascinating, intricate and beautiful...a bit like a David Lynch film in that regard). I think you hit the nail right on the head with your analysis of the titular character. He's a protagonist you could very easily feel for, with all that he's made to go through, but he shows so little willingness to look beyond his own solipsistic view of the world that he ends up trying your sympathy a few times too many...unlike John Goodman's character, who remains strangely sympathetic throughout.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and the last movie I watched was Hairspray (the new musical adaptation). Very enjoyable, John Travolta completely stole the show, but there were a lot of wonderfully peppy performances therein. My favourite song was "Welcome to the 60s".

Thirteen Ghosts

I'm really surprised this movie didn't do better at the box office, i thought it was one of the better and clear cut ghost horror movies and it certainly kept things interesting. There was plenty of unique ghosts in this movie and some great performance pieces from Matthew Lillard.

Save The Green Planet!

Well, my cavalcade of dark comedies continues in what may be the darkest one yet. This little gem from South Korea is about a man named Lee Byeung-gu and his quest to save the world from evil aliens.

At the beginning of the movie he kidnaps Kang Man-Shik, the CEO of a chemical company, believing that he will soon contact the Prince of an alien race to initate the destruction of mankind. Byeung-gu believes that Kang's true form is that of a freckled, large-earlobed humanoid capable of telepathy with his follicles.

What follows is a great send-up of thrillers, sci-fis, crime dramas, and somehow predicting the torture porn craze 3 years early. In many ways the movie should not be funny. It is very brutal in more ways than one. Such as the pain inflicted upon Kang, and the revelation of what started Lee on his quest to save mankind. But somehow it all works rather well. Because despite some predictable twists and turns I still found myself surprised by most of what happened. Is Kang really an alien or is Lee just a very disturbed man? You'll have to find out that one for yourself.

I must say this though. I was surprised by the ending. It's certainly something that most American films would never attempt.

By the way keep your eyes peeled to sly references to 2001 and Misery among others.

The Messengers

I watched it last night in the whole Halloween theme. And I survived!

Ok, yeah, of course I survived. Especially whenever my dad muted it and my sister started singing "Here Comes Santa Clause" whenever the real scary parts came. Ah, it's so fun watching horror movies with the family...

"Gorgo" on the Space network. I thought it would just be another another monster movie but it actually proved to be pretty good. I find that the older monster movies just have a much darker and scarier feel to them than modern ones.
It's about a small fishing village that's being harassed by a Godzilla-like sea-monster. They employ the help of some treasure hunters who manage to capture the creature and they take it back to London. Bad idea.
It turns out that the monster is merely the child of an even bigger creature. The rest of the movie plays out very similarly to the original Godzilla movie. The monster attacks the coast and works its way through London, destroying beloved landmark and army battalions along the way.
What grabbed me about this movie was how well they captured the sense of terror and chaos that the monster ensued. People were trampling over one another and even jumping out of the third story windows of their homes in a vain attempt to escape. You don't see a lot of that in monster movies anymore, and I think it adds so much more to the realism of the monsters rampage.
