But why is a crush on a cartoon character so different from a crush on a celebrity? They're both pretty much equally unattainable and, quite often, equally real.

Other people will argue time-in and time-out that having a crush on a cartoon character is stupid because a cartoon character isn't real. They'll say that a celebrity, at least, is a real, living, human being.

A celebrity is actually obtainable it's just extremely unlikely due to location, money, job, positions, and all that kind of stuff. You do have a better chance of hooking up with a celeb then a toon simply because of the logic of the matter.

I'm not knocking toon girls, I'm just answering the question posed honestly. Toons are not real, there drawn, voiced, written, and created by other people for a means of some kind of emotional, mental, or social based entertainment.

You can't hook up with someone or something that isn't real or exists on paper. It's a fantasy and it's a harsh truth but that in fact is where the beauty of a toon crush lies: it's just a fantasy and it can't ever be denied.

Liking toons or thinking of them as real people isn't "wrong" or "sick" either because that's the POINT of TV shows and movies. You watch them because you are trying to associate them as real life characters, to connect with them.

Connections can lead to crushes as much as anything else can.

Well, yeah, they are more attainable, it's just that most people will never get the chance of even meeting them, much less hooking up with them. They tend to hook up with other celebs, and even then it doesn't work out a majority of the time. Plus, toon crushes are also pretty safe. I mean, as long as you don't actually believe they're real and your whole life doesn't revolve around them, no harm done.

A celebrity is obtainable only to other celebrities (or someone from a high social status), like Kageri mentioned. As commoners, we pretty much have a shot in hell of forming any kind of relationship with a famous person for the same reasons (and plenty more) that you just mentioned. :3 I'm not saying it's entirely impossible, but you certainly don't see it happening very often. At least not with the A-list Hollywood crowd. It's completely off-topic, but I just felt I needed to say it, too.

As for lusting after animated characters, I find my own infatuations odd not because they're "cartoons", but rather because hardly any of them are actually human. :p I see fangirls going nuts over pretty-faced anime males, like Sessoumaru from Inuyasha (just an example right off the top of my head). To me, that is almost like an animated version of a celebrity heartthrob. People are more likely to understand, accept, and even concur with the idea of having that little fantasy with a handsome human/human look-alike character.

Another great thing about toon characters is that they almost never pretend to be something they're not. They don't often play actor, so you see the character for who they really are.

Not necessarily. Toons are based off of us, and they can pretend to be someone or something there not just like we do. Frankie pretended to be an imaginary friend in "Imposter's", RJ lied to the furry critters from "Over the Hedge".

Judge Doom pretended to BE human when was actually a toon in "Rodger Rabbit?". Cartoons may be able to do things that are out of this world, but like I said before, you'd be amazed at how similar they are to us.

I think what he means (or at least, that's what I got out of it) is that we're seeing their real lives. We see Frankie pretending to be an imaginary friend, but we also see why she did it and everything that happened in her day beforehand; we see their happiness and frustration and even when they have hidden motives, we see them scheming, and so on. Celebrities, for example, we often see only in movies and magazines, and when they are out in public or in front of cameras they have to put on an act all the time.
