Default Let's Define Time!!

What, exactly, do you think of the concept of time? Do you believe it is a plausible, moving force in our world, or is it merely a concept man has created in order to govern himself by via placing himself in a structure that separates the days into smaller measurable brackets?

Now, when I say time, I mean the actually denominators of time, not the fact that we ourselves age and grow old. What I'm saying is do the actual minutes of the day exist, or are they merely a measurement that has no true meaning that mankind has concocted in a feeble attempt to understand one of the functions of the universe?

Myself, I go with the idea that the measurements of time do not exist, and that we've fabricated them in order to be able to schedule our lives around an invisible measurement. By doing so, we give the illusion that we have more control over our lives then we actually do, as we can say that we function in time and are at the right places at the right time, regardless of the fact it's merely a measurement we use to control said schedule and thus leading to a circular train of logic.

What do you all think?

I am of the opinion that "time" exists in the sense that we can't go back with any ease. ie, in "Slaughterhouse 5" you see that the aliens can travel through time at will, or rather time travels through them at will. Like the old Mario game for the NES, you can only go forward. I think.

i think that if it is all fabricated to make our lives easier, it isnt working

i dont wanna get in all the technical stuff, but i agree that time(as in minuites, hours, days, etc.) is made to help us figure out the world a little better. but yeah, we cant go back either. so its just... there.

I would have to disagree with you SomeGuy Well at least disagree partially.

I think time is like all other Newtonian Physics units. It works well from external observations. But Like a TV you loose focus when you look at it to closely. To elaborate, how is time measured? is it accurate? does it even matter?

The concept of time is important to determin things like Acceleration, velocity, age, ect... and these things are examples of using time in a reproducable way. but then if we go farther into physics (looking at time too closely) and we are traveling approching the speed of light the same concept of Time all of a sudden gets really funky.

I can think of other things that make time get all funky as well, but I do not think they are apropiate for this forum

There is a quote from the film Waking Life which I quite like on the matter:

"There is only one instant. And it's right now. And it's eternity."
