Is it St. Swithin's Day already?
Ah, the 15th of July - here in the UK we have a charming though sadly not particularly well-acknowledged tradition of watching the skies on this particular date. For, superstition dictates that if it rains upon St. Swithin's Day, we can expect rain for the next forty days that follow, and the exact opposite in the unlikely event of complete sunshine. I suppose it's comparable to Groundhog Day in the US in some ways.
You can read more about it here: http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch...stswithun.html Note that little snippet of information at the end, which states that the superstition has been put to the test on 55 occasions, of which every single one was deemed a failure. That could, in fact, be among the reasons why not many people here seem to acknowledge it so much any more, but rest assured that the occasion will always have a special place within my own heart. It's all in good fun, after all, and I think it's kind of sad that the calender we have in our living room, despite being locally made, mentions both Canada Day and Independence Day, but offers nothing more than a completely empty box for the 15th of July. Tsk! Surprisingly, the weather's currently quite pleasant in my area, though I suppose that the day is still young, and that things are still subject to a drastic change (British weather being what it is). Well, I guess that's all I've got to say on the matter for now, but if you'd like to join forces with me in celebrating this most underrated, and delightfully illogical occasion, then you're more than welcome to do so.

I'm always up for a fun, totally illogical holiday. May thine day be filled with glorious golden sunshine, and the fouty days which follow equally so.
Happy St. Swithin's Day to you and all your countrymen! |

Actually, so far things have been going pretty well around here. The weather's beautiful, and not a drop of rain in sight. Better not jinx it though.

This holiday always reminds me of one of my personal favorite classic Simpsons scenes...
Lisa: Bart, I'm really sorry I've been ignoring you lately. I got carried away with being popular. But, now that I'm unpopular again, I want you to know I'm here for you. Bart: You can start making it up to me right now. Flanders is leaving the house. I want you to sneak in there and bring me back some evidence. And something sweet for later. Lisa: Bart, I'm here for you, but I'm not going to break into somebody's house. Bart: All right, you're right, you're right, let's, let's just forget about that. Here: let me read to you from my play. Ahem. [cockney] "`Kippers for breakfast, Aunt Helga? Is it St. Swithin's Day already?' `'Tis,' replied Aunt Helga" -- Lisa: I'm going, I'm going!

I saw this thread like 4 hours ago and then I had to take the car into the shop (just got back). And thanks to you, I had that Simpsons scene stuck in my head the whole time, lol.

Well, the day is over in the UK now, so hope it was a good St. Swithin's Day for all on the East side of the Great Pond. I know you've been having a LOT of rainy weather lately, you could use 40 days of sunshine.

Thanks for all the well wishes, guys! The UK loves you!
And great news is that yesterday was probably the most beautiful day we've had in ages. St. Swithin has chosen to smile upon us, for a change. I'm expecting the storm clouds to come gathering later on this afternoon, just to make up for it.
