Valentine's Day is coming
I was at CVS several hours ago, like I am most every night. Headed straight for the Valentine's Day goodies. I do that every year; I can't help myself. And yes, I did buy a few things for Frankie. Yeah, I know I can never give them to her but again, I can't help myself; it's something that I need to do, a way of expressing how I feel. Too bad the barbarians in the aisle with me weren't feeling quite the same way about the women they knew; their conversation seemed to center on what they hoped to get in return for the chocolates and plushies and other objects they were thinking of buying. As you might have already guessed, what they were aiming for was biological in nature. Is that all Valentine's Day is about? Apparently so, for some people. Not for me, thank you. Let me tell you a story here, from several long years ago when I actually had someone special and real in my life. "Karen" and I were in one of the local shops in Hartford one afternoon, just passing through on our way home, not looking for anything in particular. She found this adorable white plush puppy with a built-in music box that played "Where oh where has my little dog gone?" and was completely enchanted with it. You know the feeling, when you find something that really touches your heart. She sighed as she put it back on the shelf, saying that she wanted it so bad. We grabbed a couple of sodas and went back to our respective homes. Later that night I snuck back to the store and shelled out $25.00 to get the plushie. All I could think of was the look on her face in five days when I gave it to her. It wasn't really in my budget for the month but that hardly mattered. Only the joy she'd be feeling mattered. Five days later on Valentine's Day I went down to her apartment, plushie hidden in a grocery bag, told her to sit down and close her eyes. She did so, smiling in anticipation, and I flipped the switch on the plushie's music box. The smile on her face, the look of surprise and pure happiness on her face... I made the woman I loved happy, that's all I wanted. Isn't that what Valentine's Day is about? Isn't that what it should be about? It's about giving, not about what you might get in return. It's about giving of yourself, too, be it with something from a store or a homemade card, a crystalline heart trimmed with gold and engraved with poetry or a single flower, or anything, really. It's about how you feel about the special person in your life, and how they feel when you do something special for them. It's about expressing your love for that person. This is why, in part, I ask every year if y'all want your names added to Frankie's Valentine's Day card. If I just go ahead and add them, that's not you expressing anything; it's just me being presumptuous and saying "Of course he/she loves her!", which is not what Valentine's Day is about; it's not what I'm about. I'll leave that kind of behaviour to the DA crowd. So, as I gear up to search for an image of my favorite animated lady, a suitable background image, and try desperately to think of something to write on top of it all, I put the annual question to everyone reading this once again:
Who wants their name added to Frankie Foster's Valentine's Day card? |

And every year, I say, 'I do'.
You should know by now!

You know what...I don't mind being added to the card. (If you even want to add me) I might not be in love with Frankie, but I love her as if she was my own sister.

I'll be happy to add you. It's open to anyone who cares about her.

Hey, can you put my name on this card too please, Cass? I always felt slightly weird about it in the past, being a gal, but clearly no one else does, so why should I? I just want to show my appreciation for Frankie, after all.
