Arthur C. Clarke, 1917 - 2008
One of the world's finest sci-fi writers has left us today:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/obit_clarke Clarke wrote a number of my favorite books, including the Rama series, as well as my all-time favorite movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey, a true masterpiece of cinema in any genre. He was 90. He will be missed by many. |

Clarke is gone?
Man, this just adds to my current insomnia, so now I know that ANY chance of getting sleep tonight is shattered. He was a truly fantastic writer, and it's sad to see him go. It seems like a lot of the old guard for science fiction and fantasy have been passing away this year: Robert Jordan, Gary Gygax....now Clarke. Yeesh. He certainly will be missed.

Yeh and he was a great futurologist too, perhaps the father of futurology. I expect all his obits have mentioned it but it is impressive that he predicted telecommunications satellites in Geosynchronous orbit in 1945!
I first knew him through his classic 70s-80s TV series Arthur C Clarke's Mysterious World which was just gold for the kid version of me. It was great this super-clever-science-guy was into the unexplained, ghosts and esp etc. Did you have that in the States?

Damn, I've never even read his work or seen the film "2001" but I'm still sad to hear about the passing of a truly innovative writer.
Best wishes to any friends and relatives he may have. |
