Default Leona Helmsley leaves $12 mil--to her dog

Hotel magnate Leona Helmsley, the self-styled "queen of mean" who died last Monday, left $12 million to her dog Trouble.

Her brother, Alvin Rosenthal, is getting millions as well for watching after Trouble in her absence. Two of her four grandchildren get $5 million provided they visit her gravesite once a year. The other two grandchildren aren't getting squat.

Story here.

I know that some other people have left their fortunes with a pet of theirs but my question is what happens to the money when the pet passes away?

"I don't pay taxes - the little people do!" - Leona Helmsley during her tax evasion charges. May she burn in ....(you know the rest)!

Miserable old battleaxe. My sympathies to her unfortunate heirs; hopefully they didn't inherit her cold heart or her callousness, either.

There are worthier possible heirs to the $12 million.

Like me, for example. Or, you know, cancer research? Orphanages? Starving children in Iraq? SOMEONE WHO IS NOT A MALTESE DOG? Ugh. I hate people.

Where will the dog leave it when it dies? I mean it can't possibly spend it. But then again it hasn't the ability to draw up a will.

Surely it would be better for the dog to leave everyone else a fixed annual income for as long as the dog stays alive so everyone has a vested interest in the dog's well-being.

However it could end up like 'Cold Lazarus' with the dog's head attached to a life-support machine to continue it's existence in perpetuity.
