so i'd been looking for some Lovecraft to read for a while, stumbled across this website, it's got all of his works free to read:

pretty amazing stuff, i'm just working my way down the list. Guy was pretty messed up, its sort of like a sick mix of Edgar Allan Poe and Edgar Rice Burroughs. Sorry i didn't find it sooner, i'm reading "The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadoth" and wow is it creepy/trippy. Thought some of you Cthulhu fans might dig it.

"Dream Quest" is awesome, but my favorite is definitely "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward."

I love reading his stuff (how does he come up with this stuff?), but the main problem I have with them is that he obviously thinks his stories are terrifying when they're not, at least not anymore. The only story that really worked as horror for me was "The Rats in the Walls".

Anyway, have fun with your reading!

I've heard of HP Lovecraft many times (even seen nome nifty fanart of his stuff), but I've never checked out any of his work. Can anyone suggest a good starting point?

To my shame I've forgotten the title but I was made aware of Lovecraft by a short-story called 'Witches' Hollow' in a cheap ghost story/horror compilation I got when I was a kid from a 2nd hand stall. Although pretty unspectacular of itself, it hinted at unimaginable ancient evil just lurking beneath the surface of what we laughably call reality.

Anyway if you can't find that just dive into 'Call of Cthulhu'. Decades now since I read it. I will do again soon!

i'll second G-Man's recomendation of The Case of Charles Dexter Ward... that was incredible but it was pretty long, pretty much any of them rock... i liked The Beast in the Cave for a good short story, might be a good starting point for you.
