the VAST majority of the land is still cool. Varies from state-to-state a great deal, from region-to-region. Rural areas in upstate NY and Vermont tend to be laid back, you see a lot of old Volswagen buses and hippies mingling with rednecks (like myself) who just want to be left alone. In the cities people tend to be fast-paced and annoying, arrogant, and usually stupid. Avoid Massachusets and New Jersey and the southern half of New York entirely. Out west the land is more wild and less densley populated, the East Coast is the worst part of the nation (although for crime Los Angeles and Washington DC are pretty bad). California is gorgeous but full of undesirables in certain parts.
You should visit. I would love to go to New Zealand myself, gorgeous country from what i hear.
