Tien started as a rival like Sparky says, but he ended up being probably the most straight arrow type good guys in DBZ. He has 3 eyes and the eye thing kinda reminded me of Wilt, as well as Tien's pretty strong nice guy attitude.
He cares very much for his friends especially for this pale doll looking kid named Chaotzu. Wilt's attitude just reminded me of Wilt and like I said, the eye thing came to mind.

I don't watch to much DBZ because mom doesn't like a show with nothing but fighting and screaming. It bothers her almost as much as Billy repeating "Destroy us all!" in the episode "Attack of the clowns"
