"Popeye" theme now owned by Michael Jackson
You read the subject right. A sale closed today allowing Sony/ATV Music, co-owned by Michael Jackson to acquire the Famous Music library from Viacom, owners of the Paramount film library. The sale was valued at $370 million.
The Famous Music library was founded by Paramount owner Adolph Zukor in 1928, and all music created for the company's films and cartoons were published by Famous. In 1942, the Fleischer cartoon studio in New York was renamed Famous Studios. So, over the years, the themes for Popeye, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Little Audrey, Herman & Katnip, as well as TV themes for Star Trek, The Brady Bunch, and Happy Days were all published under Famous Music. They all are now the property of Sony/ATV Music and Michael Jackson. |
Well, he's not going to make any more money releasing albums. So he's going to have to make them off royalties. You know, I don't care what anyone says, I really hope old MJ can get back on his feet again. He was a great performer.

Can you point me towards a good article for this so I can post it on my Popeye forum? I'm surprised one of the guys there hasn't already done so. I could post it on the Casper forum I belong to as well.

This is crazy. Maybe he needs the money to build his giant robot...

Ooookay, for a second there I thought that this meant that Michael Jackson was buying the rights to the Popeye theme tune so that he could release a cover of it. :wiltshock:
"I'm strong to the finish (girl...), 'cos I eats me spinach (eee-heee!), I'm Popeye the Sailor Man(ow!)!" *grabs crotch, starts moonwalking* ...actually, that would be ace, I'd buy that. :bloocross: |
I would only buy it if he added "Jamon" at least twice. He is quite the collector of the esoteric. The fact that he bought this catalogue doesn't surprise me in the least.

Anyway, this sort of surprises me, believe it or not. He really does seem to be losing money lately, so perhaps this is one of the ways for him to keep it going, I guess. MJ used to be the "it-guy" back in the '80s. He seems to have fallen kind of far from that now, though, with everything that's happened with him. |

So can I, and I'm not liking it. :P Sorry, but I have no use for this guy; never have, never will.
