2010 list of words and phrases that should be banned

Each year, the wordsmiths at Lake Superior State University compiles a list of 15 words and phrases from the past year they think should be banned for their inanity and overuse to the point that they are cliche. This year's list:

"Shovel ready" (for infrastructure projects ready to break ground)
"Unfriend"
"Stimulus"
"Obamacare"
"Obamanomics" (as well as other terms used with the "Obama" prefix)
"Sexting"
"Bromance"
"Chillaxin'"
"Teachable moment"
"Toxic assets"
"In these economic times"
"Too big to fail"
"Transparent / transparency"
"App"
"Czar"

"Spooning"

I don't see the point of these kind of lists, due to our rapid information based culture a lot of these words are just going to be forgotten and replaced with terms which could be possibly even more inane and annoying.

And then the game begins anew.

There shall never be a word more inane than "pwned". ::) :P

Ugh, I second that motion. I'm sick of that word. Is it even a word? There's no vowel other than the past tense suffix of "ed"! The "o" has been taken out. Have we no respect for the rules of the English language anymore?? :bloosad:

No, it isn't. It's nothing more than a glorified, overused typo. :P

Here's another one I'm tired of hearing ALL THE DANG TIME- "epic". As in "That's so epic!" or "Epic fail!". I think it's just way over used, and has been for at least two years now. :P

"boss"

as in "that is so boss!"

LOL

Give it a couple decades and the whole "l33t speak" thing will probably become an officially recognized language.::)

Yeah, just like Klingon.

"Guesstimate" *facepalms* Anytime I hear someone say that word, I scream to myself, "You're either guessing or estimating. PICK ONE!"

"Irregardless" My beef with this word is that you can say 'regardless,' which has fewer syllables, and the sentence in question will still make sense (probably more sense).

The phrase "It's over 9000!" 9000 what?! 9000 newtons? 9000 pounds squared? Honestly, that meme has been overused to the point where it is only funny in a few select jokes.

Epic got old for me since...I don't remember exactly, but whenever people use that particular adjective and only that one, it irks me. What's wrong with "awesome" and "incredible"? As for 'epic fail', other phrases could easily work like "You moron." or "What were you thinking?" or even "THAT'S no good."

how about WAZZAAAAAAAP!

yeah, tryin' to bring that gem back along with the use of "clutch" and "diesel" as adjectives

long live the late 80's ;D

Something about the word "Chillaxin'" realllllly rubs me the wrong way. I don't know what it is about it, but it just seems incredibly stupid.

Also, if I ever get famous, I am NEVER going to support the mixture of my name and my significant other's first name into one big, pretentious word.

"Bennifer"
"TomKat"
"Brangelina"

Give me a break ::)

Cassini90125 02-08-2010 06:32 PM

"Chillaxin" is... I have no idea. :P

"Bennifer" and the rest of that nonsense makes me want to hurl. :P

Everythin with -gate tacked on to the end. Waaaay too much of that floating around.

Also, from the news I've heard this winter: snowpocalypse, snowmageddon.
