5.4 Quake hits SoCal (July 29, 2008)
 

It's been an interesting morning. :P I felt something shake this morning twice. The first one, I didn't seem to think it was real. The second one, I knew it was enough to check out what happened. The center of the quake was around Chino Hills (off in San Bernardino County). No major damages reported, and no injuries. Now I can tell folks that I have experienced my first quake that I felt.

This was your first one? Nice. We haven't had a good quake in a while. It woke me up and knocked some stuff off my shelf. My dog barked at the quake, apparently thinking that would scare it off. The only thing that bugged me about this one is my cell phone wouldn't work and I couldn't check in with my family that lives closer to Chino. But eventually I got through to everyone and found that everyone was fine. So... good quake?

Uh...yeah, good quake. 8D It's certainly something I can tell folks that are in my hometown. :cheesegrin:

I just got home from shopping and saw the coverage of the quake on Fox News when I walked in. My first thoughts were for the people here on this forum who live or are staying there. It doesn't look like it was too bad, but this geologist is saying that it could just be a precursor of a bigger quake. We have several small quakes each year here in SC, most of them centered around Charleston, which has been hit by huge, devastating quakes in the past, so we have the potential to be hit with a "Big One". We had a 4.2 quake several years ago, that actually did some minor damage in this area, but that's the biggest we've had within my memory.

A few minutes after it hit, I said to my boss - "it's over a 5, but prolly not a 5.5."

I'm expecting to find some things knocked off the shelves when I get home (perhaps 12 miles W/NW), but hopefully not much more than that.

Oh, and congrats on feeling your first one. Me ... over all these years, too many to count. 8D

I believe I heard that there is a 5% chance that it is a precursor to a bigger quake. As time goes on, that percentage will go down.

I first heard of this at getting home from work and turning on the local news. I'm glad everyone down there is ok, and no major damage was done. Kind of exciting to be able to say you've been through one now, huh? :smed: Still kind of nerve racking, though.

kinda reminds me of that time a few months ago when we had an earthquake. of course i slept right through it. :P I think it was also around 5.5 or something, but im probably wrong.

It didn't really get me nervous at all. Maybe if it had been a major earthquake, it would have been a different story. Either way, it's definitely something that I will be sharing with folks at my hometown. :P

When I was in college we had an earthquake that cracked the building I was in in half (vertically). It cracked after we had been evacuated, I guess it was trying to settle. I believe it was a 6.7 or 6.9. It was weird going back to live in a dorm with a visible crack running down the walls in the main hallway...

I'm guessing that was 1994 and the Northridge earthquake; am I right? I believe that was the last significant quake to hit somewhere near LA.

We went through a similiar thing in the UK earlier this year, as you may remember.

I saw it on the news when I got back home, when San Diego was mentioned I thought it was a massive one, relieved to hear that it was only felt there though. Still, it must've been nasty for those in the middle of it, glad to hear no-one was killed though, and I'm glad ORD, Sparky and GM are OK. I was worried about you three for a while.
It's funny in a way, because while I was in SD I noticed loads of cracks in the roads, and I was thinking they must've been caused by a past earthquake, and obviously hoping there wouldn't be one.

In the grand scheme of things, nothing major ...

- Room divider panel knocked over, busting apart a couple of the woven bamboo panels.
- A couple lamps knocked over, with one shade broken.
- Some books and papers off the bookcase.
- Kitchen drawers were opened.
- A 6-pack of Coke took a spill to the floor ... and in came a bunch of ants.

I'd freak out if a quake happened :D
