Submissions for Best Animated Feature Oscar
12 theatrical animated feature films will be submitted to the Motion Picture Academy for 2008 Oscar consideration. Only up to three films will get nominated. The submissions:
Alvin & The Chipmunks (due out Dec. 14) Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theaters Bee Movie Beowulf Meet The Robinsons Persepolis Ratatouille Shrek The Third The Simpsons Movie Surf's Up Tekkonkinkreet TMNT The three I think will get noms: Ratatouille The Simpsons Movie Surf's Up Who will win: Ratatouille But don't hold me to it. I'm the same yutz who said Philadelphia and the Yankees would be in the World Series. |
Well, I'm pretty sure The Simpsons will at least get nominated. That movie was the definition of funny.
|
It would be great to see The Simpsons Movie get nominated. I can definately see Ratatouille getting nominated (and possibly win).
|
I'm rooting for the Aqua Teens. Not much chance of success, but they're definitely my favorites. :D
|
It'll be interesting to see which film comes on top. Ratatouille may be a favorite, but favorites don't always come out on top, and as you saw last year, Pixar doesn't always win. This should be very competitive this time around.

There is a lot of good animated talent in those 12 and to only put up just 3 is freaking idiotic as hell. That's the only award I even care about anymore. The rest are given to the same 5 films NO ONE sees except for one and that's it. |
I normally pride myself on rooting for the underdog - not on this occasion, however. Ratatouille all the way! :D
I'm pretty confident that Remy and his pals will make it through to the next round, and fingers crossed will take home the gold from there. It's true that last year's selection for Best Animated Feature was a bit of a surprise, but then again the Pixar offering was Cars, which had attracted a much more lukewarm reception than their boys are normally used to. The other nominees I either haven't seen or didn't take particularly strongly to. I've already penned an extremely long-winded review of The Simpsons Movie in the relevent thread, so I'll keep this brief - it was a more agreeable time-passer than I'd been expecting, but still struck me as something of a potboiler. I personally don't deem it as Oscar-worthy, but that's just my opinion, and if popular outlook is anything to go by it'll no doubt be at least nominated. I think I speak for a lot of people, however, when I say that Shrek the Third has no business whatsoever even being invited to the Oscars. :P |
I'm definately routing for The Simpsons Movie, there's no doubt in my mind. Ratatouille was also pretty good, but I just thought that The Simpsons Movie was better. *shrug*
I also agree with Mr. Marshmallow about how idiotic it is that there are 12 movies, which get eliminated to 3, elminated down to 1. I gues the movies that don't get to the top 3 will have this note under the awads section on their Wikipedia article.... "Nominated for a nomination for an Oscar Award" 8D |

I am surprised that Alvin and The Chipmunks is even being considered at all, it's not a full length animated feature. It's a live action/animated picture.

YAY! Shrek won't win this year!
I see this being what we'll see: Ratatouille (Which will probably win) The Simpsons Movie (Which I want to win) Bee Movie or Surf's Up |
I personally haven't seen most of those movies, the only ones I did see are the Aqua teen Hunger Force movie, Simpsons movie, Ratatouille, and TMNT. To be perfectly honest the movies I think SHOULD be in the stupid ass small 3 available slots are Ratatouille, TMNT, and Beowulf.
Now I have not seen Beowulf nor do I plan to but from what I see the movie looks like a visual feast of kick ass animations, and I trust Zemeckis seeing as how he is a kick ass director. I believe Ratatouille and Shrek the 3rd have the best chances of winning (despite I've heard Shrek was craptacularly bad). I thought TMNT was fantastic and I hope that makes it in the top 3, I felt that was such a better constructed movie in story, characters, and voice acting. Surfs up looked completely stupid if you asked me. It looked like an unintelligent mess of cheap, uninteresting characters and a plot that sounds superbly lame. However, even though I'm pretty positive Aqua teen will not even be in the top 3, if it does, I will laugh my ass off uncontrollably because if anyone has seen that movie its hilarious to think a movie with THAT kind of content is in nominational status with the likes of Pixar and such 8D. |

I would likt to see TMNT nominated, but that's just because I am me. |
Currently, every Best Animated Feature Oscar which "Disney" have won is owed to their underlings down at Pixar. Here are all the winners from years gone by (bearing in mind that this is still a relatively recent catagory). Let me know if I've gotten anything wrong.
2002: Shrek (Dreamworks) 2003: Spirited Away (Studio Ghibli) 2004: Finding Nemo (Pixar) 2005: The Incredibles (Pixar) 2006: Wallace and Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit (Aardman) 2007: Happy Feet (Animal Logic) Overall, a more eclectic list than you might imagine. Of those six choices, I'm in agreement with four. I still haven't seen Happy Feet (or Monster House for that matter), so the most recent outcome remains undecided for me. How Shrek managed to trump Monsters Inc, however, is something I anticipate will be lost on me until the day I die. I'm aware that it happened at the height of Shrek's popularity (something which I never really got into), but still... |
Shrek will definately not win this year. Mr.M, I haven't seen Surf's Up yet, but it got positive reveiws.

And the final nominees are (according to IMDB, which as a rule I generally steer clear from):
Persepolis Ratatouille :yeah: Surf's Up Excellent work, my dear Remy. I'll be rooting for you all the rest of the way. I haven't seen Persepolis, but Surf's Up was nothing too extraordinary in my opinion. EDIT: Ratatouille got nominated for best original screenplay, best sound editting and best music too. Hurrah! :yeah: |

Amazing. I'll be rooting for our dear Remy all the way too, and I hope the film wins all those awards. That'd be great! :D |
Well given the nominations, it looks like Pixar will once more be tasting the sweet nectar of victory.
If not only for the fact Ratatouille was a great movie but also when you take into consideration its competition. While Persepolis is a very good movie in it's own right, it may be considered a little too edgy for the academy to give the award to given the subject matter of the film. And while Surf's Up was a good film with a clever narrative device (IE the Mockumentuary format) I honestly do not see it making much headway either. (And after all an animated penguin feature won the award last year, I just can't see lightning striking twice for our black and white flippered friends.) |

According to an article from animationmagazine.net, even the people who made Surf's Up (SONY) didn't expect it to get a nomination.

WTF is Persepolis & how did it beat The Simpsons Movie to the spot?

I didn't care much for The Simpsons Movie myself, so I'm not disappointed that it didn't make it. It seemed more dependent upon the popularity of its franchise than anything else. |
Hmmm..... Doesn't seem like my cup of tea.
|
And the winner...
Ratatouille!!! :yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah: I'm so delighted. Also, the Coen Bros took home the award for Best Picture (and Best Directing). Best flippin' year at the Oscars ever. At least within my own lifetime. :D |
I read that our rat movie won it's Oscar last night in the paper (Funny, I saw most of the awards ceremony and missed the announcement). I must say...Yay!!! (claps and cheers loudly)
Good job, good job. Congratuations to all those people who worked very hard on the film; you deserve the win! Whoo!! In general, I enjoyed the ceremony: It was amusing and most of the awards went to very deserving people/films. There were some slow parts, but every Oscar awards is bound to have those. |
I want to resurrect this thread because it was announced a while ago that 20 animated films have been selected to be in the running for the Best Animated Feature Oscar for the 2010 Academy Awards. Here they are:
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel Astro Boy Battle for Terra Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (SWEET!) Coraline Disney's A Christmas Carol The Dolphin – Story of a Dreamer Fantastic Mr. Fox Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs Mary and Max (Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi! 8D) The Missing Lynx Monsters vs. Aliens 9 Planet 51 Ponyo The Princess and the Frog The Secret of Kells Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure (Awesome!) A Town Called Panic Up |
I'm guessing Up will be nominated, and I hope Coraline will as well.
