Tintin: The Movie

Regarding the upcoming Tintin movie, Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg (a huge fan of the series) are joining forces to bring the beloved reporter to life, via performance-capture (like Beowulf). There will be three films. Peter will direct one and Spielberg will direct the other, with a third director yet to be announced.

In the latest news, Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat has been hired to adapt the books for the movie.

EDIT - I realised I got the director order wrong. Spielberg will direct the first one, while Jackson will direct the second one!

Interesting. I heard that Jackson and Spielberg were going to do this, but the fact that they're taking turns directing one film after another is different.

Anyway, thanks for the information, frankie_fan. ;D

Straight from WorstPreviews.com, Spielberg talks about Tintin:

[via IGN]

Speaking from the set of "Indiana Jones IV," Spielberg said that the film will be shot entirely with motion-capture technology, which is familiar to Jackson after "King Kong" and the "Lord of the Rings" films but still relatively new to Spielberg. The director said that each filmmaker will shoot 30 days of motion-capture: Spielberg will shoot his in the United States while Jackson will shoot in New Zealand.

Spielberg also said that the special effects will be produced by Jackson's Weta Workshop, but a high-speed internet connection between the two locations will allow the production to receive and process images quickly.

From IGN.com, casting has now gone underway in LA for Tintin.

Will I get beat up for looking forward to this? :bloosmirk:

Indiana Jones always reminded me of TinTin, so I'll expect a lot from Spielberg on a TinTin movie! been discussing it with friends online for quite some time now

This shows just how attentive I am, I guess. I've known about this project for a while, but only when I was reading a magazine in the doctors' waiting room today did I learn that it was going to be created using motion capture. Previously, I think I'd just sort of assumed that it was going to be an entirely live action affair.

I currently have mixed feelings about this. The Tintin stories have the potential to translate into a great set of movies, though whenever I think of feature films animated entirely by motion-capture, the fiasco with the Polar Express is what comes to mind. I'm not making judgements about the movie itself, which I haven't seen, but I witnessed enough promotional material to be able to empathise with those folks who were turned off from it by look of the animation alone. The characters seemed so real, and yet so eerily artifical at the same time. I still have a few more weeks to wait until I'll get to see Beowulf, when I'll see if the concept has anything more to offer.

According to this article, Speilberg and Jackson admitted that live action was probably the obvious way to go, but didn't think that it would do justice to Herge's character artwork, so I'm expecting them to be somewhat stylised. Well, I'm open-minded at this stage.

I know that this hasn't been updated for a VERY LONG time, but I just had to shout this one out:

Aside from the fact that Spielberg is having problems with funding the first of the trilogy, he's pushing forward with it, and he now wants Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) and Danny Butterman (Nick Frost) to be in it! Here's what Simon had to say, courtesy of WorstPreviews.com:

To work with him is beyond..."

I cannot express how interesting this is going to be!

EDIT - Oh, I almost forgot: It's been revealed that the first movie will be based on The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure.

frankie_fan 01-06-2009 06:28 PM

In my last post, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost were in talks to star in Steven Spielberg's Tintin.

Well AICN is saying that they are no longer in talks. They are in!!

frankie_fan 01-27-2009 05:28 PM

The cast has finally been set. As well as Andy Serkis and both Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, Billy Elliot star Jamie Bell will now star as Tintin, while Daniel Craig has been cast as Red Rackham. Rounding out the cast are Gad Elmaleh, Toby Jones (Dobby the House Elf from Harry Potter) and Mackenzie Crook (Pirates of the Caribbean). Paramount and Sony are co-financing the film, and the first Tintin film will be titled The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn, based on the two books The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure.

John Willliams' agent has now confirmed that he will compose music for the first Tintin movie directed by Steven Spielberg, but it is unknown if he will compose music for the second one directed by Peter Jackson.

Unlike a certain British Prime Minister of recent decades, this lady is for turning:

I know nothing!

Although I may have previously implied that I thought this movie was a very bad idea, I'm prepared to eat my words. While I still maintain that Spielburg and Jackson are quite capable of making a nasty mess on the floor and that even Pegg and Frost have not always been in totally brilliant things I think this might be a winner. Why? Well rumour has it that Joe Cornish is among the scriptwriters and if Cornballs is involved you can reasonably expect it to be played for the right kind of laughs. He's a very funny guy.

Incidently one thing that Nick Frost was in that I definately liked a lot was the 2nd series of Hyperdrive with Kevin Eldon and Miranda Hart.

Well, I did some research on the progress, and yes, Joe Cornish (as well as Edgar Wright and Steven Moffat) is one of the screenwriters of the film. I've also found out that the first film will actually be based on the books The Secret of the Unicorn and The Crab with the Golden Claws.

frankie_fan 08-27-2009 07:32 PM

Moviefone recently chatted with stuntman Garrett Warren, who revealed some details regarding Tintin:
Quote:

It looks an awful lot like the cartoon. They really wanted to bring the cartoon to life. So if you know the cartoon, or have seen the books, that's what it looks like. It's beautiful. You would have thought to yourself that they would have tried to go for a more realistic look, but they're actually trying to preserve the look and essence of the original 'Tintin' characters.
He also revealed some details about Iron Man 2, but that's for another thread! 8D

Major Abbey 08-29-2009 04:19 AM

I'll give it a chance. I loved the books and enjoyed the cartoon, so I'm curious as to how this will turn out.

The only thing I'm a bit annoyed by is that I don't think my favourite book (Cigars of the Pharoah) will be made into a movie. But that doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing.

frankie_fan 11-04-2009 08:06 PM

I know Wikipedia isn't always a trusted source, but I just read that it'll apparently be based on four of the Tintin books: The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Shooting Star, The Secret of the Unicorn and Red Rackham's Treasure.

Another Castle 11-05-2009 04:38 AM

I have heard about this film for quite some time now. It has loads of big names behind it, but they struggled for funding, so was delayed a bit.

Originally, Thomas Sangster (who voices Ferb in Phineas and Ferb) was cast as Tintin, but he dropped out due to other commitments

Thanks for the link. That's usually the case with motion capture films. The filming itself takes the quickest, but the actual animation process takes the longest!

Mega bump here, but you may have seen elsewhere that images are available of this film

An official poster has been revealed and... It. Is. AWESOME!!

I'm still in awe of an Edgar Wright-written Steven Spielberg-directed film!

taranchula 05-17-2011 05:52 AM

Now there is a trailer to go with that poster.

frankie_fan 05-17-2011 03:19 PM

I just saw that trailer, and it actually looks good.

Sparky 05-17-2011 03:35 PM

So this is all CGI, right? I'm hearing some uncanny valley comments, I hope that's not true.

frankie_fan 05-17-2011 03:53 PM

It's a motion-capture film, like The Polar Express and A Christmas Carol

Sparky 05-17-2011 10:39 PM

Well Polar Express was major Uncanny Valley. :/

frankie_fan 07-11-2011 03:20 PM

A brand new trailer has been released:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hDmKOk37Uo

From what I can see here, not only does this look like a really great film, but I'm already predicting great comedy gold from both Simon Pegg and Nick Frost as Thomson and Thompson! 8D
