For the Love of...CELERY?

Okay you have to wonder...most five year old kids I know HATE vegetables, especially things like celery. This has got to be one of Bloo's strangest tastes. (And apparently, he likes it plain, not even with cream cheese or peanut butter.)
Also I read on Wiki he likes cranberry-apple juice, but I know not to trust everything it says. I've seen the celery proved on the show itself.

Out of curiousity, does anyone here remember liking something like celery as a young kid? If anything, I'd eat off the cream cheese (my grandma used to make those snacks a lot when we came over for holidays) but never touch the celery...YUCK. :D

Bloo2daMacs 08-29-2006 01:52 PM

well, it was proven Bloo likes juice boxes on Hiccy Burp, but I'm nt sure what kind of juice.

Any way, I know I always DISPISED clery as a kid. For a long time. I still don't have much of a taste for it!

Emma 08-29-2006 02:17 PM

He was proven that he likes cranberry-apple juice in the episode 'Bye Bye Nerdy'. He asks another friend, Bulby, to bring him some juice then complains about it not being "Cran-apple". Although, just like Bloo, he drinks it anyway.

And I think that Bloo liking celery was just used to show how Bloo will always find something to complain about (one of my favorite aspects of his personality, too :D ). It probably also helps diversify his tastes and make him seem more real, much like his countless allergies. After all, we all like something other people would find gross.

InsaneFan 08-29-2006 02:19 PM

I've always been able to eat celery...But only with peanut butter.

Or cream cheese. ;)

Cassini90125 08-29-2006 03:34 PM

I like it plain, chilled, and right out of the package. ;D

Congrats to LaBlooGirl for passing the 500-post mark! :D

Congrats to LaBlooGirl for passing the 500-post mark! :D

Thank you, thank you! ::bows::

I was waiting to become a Foster's Legend. I think after a year I get to do a title thing...hmmm....that may be a while yet. :)

Actually not really....in October that makes a year! WHOOT!

Kzinistzerg 08-29-2006 03:47 PM

Hmmm... i liked celery. i never really disliked veggies except for the obvious slimy ones, like brussel sprouts.

I still hate brussels sprouts. >.<

I've liked celery (plain or not) ever since I've first tried it but I wouldn't know what age that was. I've actually started eating it more recently.^^

Mmm celery...

I like it plain or with dip, but I don't like it in things, like salad or diced chicken. Biting into something soft like chicken salad and then hitting that hard, crunchy celery is not a texture I enjoy.

lucyrocks73 08-30-2006 03:45 AM

I was the anti-green vegetable when I was little... I now am addicted to spinach (yum!). and I tolerate everything else.

Except I won't eat celery without peanut butter... And never ranch dressing, which is what everyone else does apparently. I can't stand ranch dessing on anything...

And now I will stop babbling about vegetables... 8D

It makes you wonder what was in "it" that Bloo hated so much...

-Marty 8-)

Dude13 08-30-2006 04:24 AM

I never had any problems with celery, broccoli, spinach, or any of those when I was little. Of course, that only happened because my mom never told me what it was, so I would always just eat it without thinking twice.

Come to think of it, that's how she got me to try most new foods.....trickery!

Cassini90125 08-30-2006 05:59 AM

I'm moving this thread to the "Way Off Topic" area, as celery, while a pleasant and versatile vegetable, isn't really a major Foster's subject. Nice topic, though. :)

LOL Point taken. THough it WAS specifically about Bloo and HIS taste for celery...so it was slightly Foster's related.

BlooCheese 08-30-2006 08:52 AM

I eat whatever ends up on my plate.

scary_dream 08-30-2006 09:55 AM

I've always liked veggies, even as a kid. There were very few I wouldn't eat. I was like the "opposite" child, because my parents had trouble getting me to eat beef, even burgers! I still think it's kind of gross.

I've never had brussels sprouts, but if they taste anything like the brussels sprouts Jones soda, COUNT ME OUT! Seriously... that stuff tasted like... like... I don't know. It was really, really bad though. I couldn't even swallow the first sip.

Cassini90125 08-30-2006 10:10 AM

Brussels sprouts are an aquired taste. I like them best with a little lemon juice. I also like to peel a few of them apart, dice the leaves, and add them to pasta sauce. They're good, but most people think they're an ingredient in "IT". ;)

Thornwhistle 08-30-2006 03:28 PM

I like broccollii, spinach, sliced beets, and sometimes boiled cabbage.

Nice to know I'm not the only one. :)

Thornwhistle 08-31-2006 03:57 PM

I believe fondess for veggies is gender-biased,because guys are more apt to shun eating those healthy greens than girls would.

I grill, therefore I am. ;D

kageri 08-31-2006 05:06 PM

I think the grossness of leafy green vegetables transcends gender.

What? What's wrong with vegetables? The crispness of a fresh stick of celery, the glorious, pungent aroma of diced onion, the wholesome crunchiness of a carrot, the subtle flavor of an artichoke, the refreshing lightness of a tossed salad with herbs... Oh, who am I kidding, I WANT A STEAK!!!

When I was in art school, all the girls in my class were either vegan or vegetarians. I was the only person who ate meat and it was so awkward! I tried to be a good sport, but there were times when I wanted to scream "give me a ham sandwich for God's Sake!"

scary_dream 09-02-2006 08:50 PM

Hah I'm not a vegetarian or a vegan, either. I enjoy meat and also, I think (no offense to vegetarians or vegans) that humans were MADE to be carnivores/omnivores. Look at our eyes. I know it's a primitive way, but it's a relatively good rule of thumb. Most vegetarian animals (deer, cows, antelope, etc.) have eyes on the sides of their heads to aid in their peripheral vision and help them see predators. Most carnivore/omnivore animals (cats, dogs, humans) have eyes directly in front to aid in depth perception and to help them judge the distance and attack prey more easily.

Another relatively good way of telling is our teeth. Humans have canines for tearing food. Most herbivores have almost all molars for grinding up plant tissue.

While I know we don't have to attack prey with our bare hands or anything, it doesn't stop nature from putting our eyes in front and giving us sharp teeth.

(But hey... if a human chooses to become a vegetarian, that's fine by me. I really respect them for making a decision like that in such a meat-filled world! It's got to be difficult.)

Cassini90125 09-02-2006 09:01 PM

It's also true that Vitamin B12 is not found in plants, only in animal tissue. The body can store enough to last for a year or more, but without it, you will die, plain and simple. Today we can make synthetic B12 from non-meat sources, but our ancestors didn't have that option. In those days, a Vegan diet was nothing more than suicide. So yeah, mankind is in fact meant to eat meat, whether PETA likes it or not. :)

Emma 09-03-2006 01:28 AM

Ugh...a fan of PETA, I am not... :P

ch3353-h4xx0rrrr 09-03-2006 05:03 AM

YODA!

... right. Moving on.

Mankind is losing those primitive instincts. We used to NEED the appendix for SOMETHING. We used to NEED our wisdom teeth for SOMETHING. Now, they're just annoying little body parts that we take out because they have the potential to kill us. Oh, and tonsils. :wiltshock: ;D

I love meat. I feel bad for all the chickens and pigs, (not cows; they're stupid animals. Seriously. Like, peanut-brain.) but survival of the fittest, right?

Cassini90125 09-03-2006 06:15 AM

If they were meant to survive, they would not be on my plate. Pass the gravy. ;D

MWA HA HA! Hey, how did this thread go from celery to meat? lol You guys are all too funny! 8D

Cassini90125 09-03-2006 06:44 AM

Threads wander. :) I do love celery, though. One of my favorite celery dishes is where you cut it into matchsticks and braise it in white wine with a little tarragon. Makes a good side dish for chicken. :)

kageri 09-03-2006 09:35 AM

I only discovered recently that people put cream cheese in celery, actually. I thought it was just peanut butter...

Cassini90125 09-03-2006 09:54 AM

We used to have it that way every Thanksgiving, with a little paprika sprinkled on top for color. Very good, but best when chilled.

scary_dream 09-03-2006 11:18 AM

We've not used cream cheese before, but sometimes we use that EZ cheese stuff in the can. It's ok, but I still prefer peanut butter

lucyrocks73 09-03-2006 12:12 PM

My god, Cassini, me thinks you are an expert chef... You know how to prepare everything, it seems!!!

My mom and grandmother think they have failed in bringing me up because given the option, I'd eat steak over green bean and tuna surprise (as they call it).

Hey, they feel better once I eat their baked ziti (we're Italian... can you tell?) without complaining about the ricotta cheese like all of the guys do in my family...

Heh, for some reason the mention of baked ziti gives me some serious Sopranos flashbacks. :bloocross:

My thanks, but really, it's not that hard. All you need is an inspiring recipe, an appetite, and a little time, energy, and patience. :)

Kzinistzerg 09-04-2006 10:10 AM

Ooo... ziti.... ricotta cheese is yummy. It's just painful to hear the people on TV pornouce it "rih-caw-tah"... AAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Back on the part about celery, it's fairly good with salads because it's crunchy. Spinach is gross when cooked but actualyl quite good raw, and has anyone has swiss chard? It's a weird green thingie-plant that's okay baked in a bread shell with some mozzarella.

Cassini90125 09-21-2006 04:41 PM

I was in one our local bookstores today. I saw this one, thought of my big buddy Eduardo, and just had to buy it:

There's some really good recipes in here. Coincidentally, tomorrow is my shopping day; I leave it to you to guess what's #1 on this week's grocery list. ;)
