Get Smart

Who remembers this classic comic series from the 60s? Don Adams as Maxwell Smart, who always triumphed over the forces of rottenness, and loving it.

But to be honest, the reason I posted this is because director Peter Segal (50 First Dates, The Longest Yard) is currently filming a movie version of this classic series for Warner Bros and Village Roadshow Pictures. The cast are as follows:

Steve 'She is such a liar' Carell as Maxwell Smart (which I think is perfect for him )
Anne 'I'm actually taller than Steve Carell' Hathaway as Agent 99
Alan 'I won an Academy Award' Arkin as Chief of CONTROL
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson as Agent 23
Terence 'Kneel before Zod' Stamp as Siegfried
David Koechner (Anchorman) as Agent Larabee
Terry Crews (Norbit) as Agent 91
Masi Oka (TV's Heroes) as Bruce
Ken 'Please, get your balls out of my face' Davitian (Borat) as Shtarker

Feel free to post anything about both this movie and the original TV series.

To give you an idea of what's it like so far, here's a link:

I didn't know the tv show was based on a comic.

Anyway, I'm surprise that Warner Bros. is doing a movie version of this film.

Sounds interesting. I might check it out once it comes out in theaters.

Uh, I meant 'comic' as in 'comedy'. Sorry if I confused you. :(

Apology accepted. :)

I used to love that show! What was it called, the "Cone of Silence" or something like that. Hillarious.

pitbulllady 04-28-2007 12:33 PM

Man, I LOVED that show! That was like, the first tv series I ever watched on a regular basis! The new cast sounds pretty good, though I'm not a big Steve Carell fan. I think the rest are dead-on, though, to the originals.

I remember when they had that TV movie back in the 80's "The Nude Bomb" it was same cast revise there roles. but now 30 years later would not work so well, but it is great that they are making a new movie. I hope it will revise the series and mabe bring back some of those 60 spy flix.

There was an episode where Max and the Chief used index cards in the Cone of Silence. I don't know what episode it was though.

Oh good, that means I am not mis-remembering things.

I would watch the reruns if they aired again.

If anyone wants to express their undying gratitude to me for running this site I would gladly accept a libation of the Get Smart DVD set. Lol because that's probably the only way I'll ever be able to get my hands on it. It's freaking expensive. Worth it, but expensive.

frankie_fan 05-01-2007 08:15 PM

Update!

Trevor Rabin (Flyboys, Gridiron Gang, National Treasure) has just been chosen to do the music for Get Smart.

I don't listen to his music, but I'm really looking forward to how he's going to do the Get Smart theme. One of my favourite things about TV shows becoming movies is how the theme song becomes orchestrated, or what I like to call, becomes a movie verison of the theme.

frankie_fan 06-25-2007 11:01 PM

Get Smart finishes filming on June 25th!

According to MTV News, Steve Carell has mentioned that Mel Brooks and Buck Henry (the creators of the show) have approved of the movie. In fact, they contributed to some jokes that have made their way into the movie!!!

Even better, the film will mix the old with the new. In other words, it will include things that pays homage to the original while updating it for modern times! This means the shoe phone and the famous opening (Max walking through the hallway of doors) will be in the movie!!

I guess the cone of silence will be in it as well. It didn't say.

I can't even imagine it NOT being in it...which of course means its entirely possible. :P

frankie_fan 07-08-2007 10:08 PM

According to IMDB.com, post-production has begun.

I've also noticed here (http://talk.hsx.com/films/post.htm?0702155544.notfabio) that a teaser for this film will be screening with Harry Potter 5 and will be part of a combo trailer with 10,000 BC (like Harry Potter 5 and Fred Claus was a combo trailer for Happy Feet). I don't know if it's true or not. If anyone is seeing Harry Potter 5, let me know!

Sparky 07-09-2007 07:38 PM

Apparently there will be a preview of Get Smart at the Comic-Con, as well.

I'm sure someone will sneak in a camera and post it on youtube later that day.

frankie_fan 07-09-2007 09:17 PM

No need to worry. ET (Entertainment Tonight) will be airing a sneak peak of Get Smart tomorrow (as in 11th July in Australia. Not too sure when in the US)!

Thanks for posting up the link for that trailer.

I'm beginning to think I might look forward to this film next summer.

Judging from the trailer, it seems to stay true to the show and it's format (and I'm saying that in a good way).

frankie_fan 07-11-2007 03:31 PM

Like Mr. Marshmallow said about Transformers...

But like I ALWAYS say, after the trailers and photos start to pour out, people's minds changed and I'm really looking forward to seeing this movie.
That's how I feel about this and Speed Racer. They're probably saving the best parts ('Sorry about that, Chief.' 'I demand the Cone of Silence!' '...and loving it!') for the next trailer.

Plot and Set Visit

Nothing news-worthy, but here's how the story will go, courtesy of ComingSoon.net:

When the headquarters of U.S. spy agency Control is attacked and the identities of its agents compromised, the Chief (Alan Arkin) has no choice but to promote his ever-eager analyst Maxwell Smart, who has always dreamt of working in the field alongside stalwart superstar Agent 23 (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson). Smart is partnered instead with the only other agent whose identity has not been compromised: the lovely-but-lethal veteran Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway). As Smart and 99 get closer to unraveling KAOS' master plan - and each other - they discover that key KAOS operative Siegfried (Terence Stamp) and his sidekick Shtarker (Kenneth Davitian) are scheming to cash in with their network of terror. Given little field experience and even less time, Smart - armed with nothing but a few spy-tech gadgets and his unbridled enthusiasm - must defeat KAOS if he is to save the day.

Also from ComingSoon.net, they made a trip to the set. Here's the story:
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=22136

I did some searching and it has been confirmed that, according to USA Today, as well as the shoe phone and the opening, the Cone of Silence will be in the movie!

frankie_fan 07-28-2007 08:07 PM

I may not go to Comic-Con (mainly because I'm from Australia), but I got this great scoop from the Warner Bros. Panel at Comic-Con, courtesy of YouTube.com:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzYKgMmdBB0

So there you go, straight from Comic-Con!

Now, if only they showed a sneak peek of Speed Racer...

frankie_fan 08-10-2007 08:23 PM

Speaking of sneak peeks, Ain't It Cool news was at the Get Smart panel, and they give us a walkthrough of the footage that was shown:

'The footage they showed today was pretty damn funny. Anne Hathaway (playing 99) kicks all sorts of ass. She has her s*** together and beats the living hell out of the baddies in her path. Steve Carell is, of course, a bumbler, but a lovable one.

Oddly enough, the action is pretty big. It's not like NAKED GUN or something, but it's like these characters are in a real dangerous situation, which I can't wait to see... especially since their main bad guy is Terence Stamp.

I saw the shoe phone. I saw Carell try painfully to use a mini harpoon gun, tether attached... by the end of the sequence he had pierced his own lip a couple times and somehow made a small web of zigzagging tether. I saw Hathaway enter a henchmen filled elevator and walk out of it a floor up, all the men crumpled on the floor. I saw Alan Arkin tackle someone. I saw James Caan playing the president. I saw Hiro (Masi Oka) and Nate Torrence (from TV's STUDIO 60) making some gadgets. I saw Carell riding in a jet fighter holding a bag of his own disgustingly thick puke... the jet makes a turn and the puke doesn't stay in its little baggie.'

I personaly wished that I could see this footage myself, but there you go!

Agent 13 Cast!

According to AICN, Agent 13 (who'll make a cameo in this movie) is going to be played by Bill Murray (Groundhog Day).

Those who don't remember Agent 13 from the TV show, he was always stationed inside weird places like mailboxes, lockers and washing machines.

Also, from the Comic-Con Panel, Hymie the Robot will appear in the movie as well, although it's not known who'll be playing him.

sweet!

The Life Aquatic was a great movie

taranchula 08-13-2007 09:15 PM

Glad to see the people behind the film are really going all out trying to stay true to the source material.

Because Get Smart just wouldn't be Get Smart without Hymie or Agent 13

And, All right Bill, this totally makes up for those two Garfield flicks you did.

frankie_fan 08-14-2007 07:41 PM

Nothing news-worthy (again!), but here's Steve and Anne as Max and 99, if you haven't seen it yet:

Offical Movie Poster

We FINALLY have an official poster, and it looks funny. Check it out:

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q...oviePoster.jpg

In other news, Dwayne Johnson chatted to Sci Fi Wire about the movie and says that his character was created for the movie. "It's a brand, new character that we created for the story. Agent 23 is Control's greatest agent and I am Steve Carell's best friend in the movie. Physically, aesthetically, we're funny. And then, of course, as the movie goes on and our relationship continues to grow and many twists happen in the movie, it's great. We're excited about that."

He also gave us an idea of how Steve will tackle Maxwell Smart. "Pete Segal, as well as Steve Carell, approached the project with great respect, especially Carell. [He] approached it with great respect, especially to the Adams family. That was important. They came to the set. It was great. And he wanted to do right by them. He really, really nailed it. You'll see."

The film will also feature cameos by some famous actors. "There's a whole bunch of cameos. Bill Murray has a cameo."

Sparky 11-15-2007 09:35 PM

Thank you very much, FF. I don't go out poking around for info, I rely on people to bring it to me, lol. ;)

I still want the complete TV series. Oh well, when I win the Lottery... :P

I checked the cast list for Get Smart on IMDB.com, and the cast has been updated to include Bill Murray as Agent 13, Dalip "The Great Khali" Singh, and even Bernie Kopell, who played Siegfried in the original series!

Partymember 11-24-2007 08:20 PM

Bill Murray

(thank you baby Jesus!)

The Life Aquatic rocked my world...

frankie_fan 12-05-2007 09:49 PM

I know some people don't trust Wikipedia, but it's cast list for Get Smart has been updated to include the actor who'll play Hymie the Robot. Drum roll please...

http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q...kWarburton.jpg
Patrick Warburton

I always thought he would be perfect for Hymie. They must've listened to me!
