Pan's Labyrinth
I've seen several things about Pan's Labyrinth, including hearing music from it on XM and reading several articles about it in Fango, and I really, REALLY want to see it. It looks very enthralling! One of the Fango articles I read about it discussed makeup/costuming, and man... those looked great.
The problem is, I've not heard anything else about it. I read something on it saying "Now playing in theaters nationwide!" but I've not seen it anywhere in the states... Wikipedia, while not necessarily a solid source but still (kind of) reliable on some items, said that it was released mid-January. Are the towns around mine just lame and didn't ever show it, or is it awaiting a fuller release in the States? |
It's in some theatres in the US, some not. They might not be showing it or they might just be late, mine took a while to show it. You can download it off of limewire, though. Or somewhere else I'm sure.
I haven't seen it but my friends think it's absolutely brilliant. The fact that it's gorey and in spanish is offputting to me, but I'll probably download it one of these days anyway because everyone is like doooooood itz tha best movie evaaaaaar. |
i can't wait to see "300"...MOLON LABE!
btw my lame theater isn't playing "Pan's Labyrinth" either :( |
Oh boy....
If you find a theater that plays it, GO AND SEE IT. It is a FANTASTIC film, and worthy of every oscar it's gonna win tonight (and trust me, it WILL win). It's really violent, though, so if you're a bit squeamish, you may wanna close your eyes for some scenes. |

If it's a haunting and powerful film experience you're looking for, and you think you can stomach quite a lot of grim brutality, then by all means give it a go. I personally thought it was wonderful, even if it wasn't quite the movie that the trailers had prepared me for, but I nonetheless had to spend much of the running time watching it through the gaps between my fingers (stamina in the face of extreme grotesqueness was never one of my strong points). |
I'm good with gore and brutality, so ARRRGGHHH now I wanna see it even more!!! I wish theaters around here weren't LAME.
I can't download anything because my computer is slow, too, so... :( ugh. I guess I'll have to wait for a DVD release. |
I have no real desire to see Pans Laberynth because, truth be told, I actually think it looks kin of scary.

Now I want to see it. I had no idea it was a horror film. My brother didn't describe it well, lol. Its playing here.
|
:P Lucky Sparky!!
My Fango has the Pale Man on the front of it, and he IS one creepy-looking character. I think that is what draws me to it - how creepy the whole movie looks. I love stuff like that. He looks even crazier without his hands to his face! |
Fango. What a cool magazine. If I actually had time to sit down and read magazines, I'd read that one. Anyways maybe I'll try to catch this movie this week by myself, unless my brother still wants to see it. But I hope the film doesn't vanish from theatres before we can go.
|
The pale man was AWESOME!! I loved that part so much. Poor Ophelia, though. I feel sorry for her actress. That dude was actually in a Pale man suit. He wasn't CGI. She saw exactly what he looked like, and boy oh boy would that freak ME out.
|
So did I hear right about Pan's Laberyinth winning the Oscher for best foreign film, or something? If so, the movie has my congratulations.:D

Yeah, just from what I've seen, it deserved mega-props on the makeup! It really goes into detail about it in the magazine, and tells about all the stuff the actors had to go through to look that way.
SO awesome. |
Well, doesn't look like we'll get to see this in theatres. :( It ends its run at the Crest Theatre this Thursday, and Saturday is the earliest GM and I could go together. I'd go alone but they're only running evening shows this week, and I refuse to be in downtown Sacramento after dark by myself. It's kinda scary down there. Oh well. We'll rent it when it hits DVD.
edit: Actually I/we might be able to see it in a nearby town. :yeah: We'll see. |
*crosses fingers for Sparky* I hope you get to see it!
I don't mind waiting for the DVD... since I can't see it in theaters, it's all I have left! |
I saw Pan's Labyrinth the day it came out here in ATL. It was great. It was really gritty.
|
Saw it. It was really beautiful, and I believe the director was trying to show that no matter how frightening the imagery of the other-world, that the real world is really much more violent. The only thing that really bothered me was the lady in the audience who brought her children; the little one whimpered throughout much of the movie. That was just wrong. "Look, a fairy tale, in Spanish! The kids'll love it!" (They spoke Spanish.)

Now it makes me want to but it on DVD (haven't seen a movie for a long while). |
There's some huge debates going on in the forum at IMDB about whether or not the fantasy elements were real of all in Ofelia's mind. When I watched the movie, I never once doubted that it was real. But after reading the arguments (especially the "Occurance At Owl Creek Bridge"-alluded one, since we see Ofelia laying on the ground dying at the START of the film, and then at the end again) yeah I can see how its possible that the fantasy was in her head. But unfortunately it makes me like the film a little less to realise that it might not have been real. I like when fantasy is real. :P
|
Well, it had certainly never crossed my mind whilst watching the film that the fantasy sequences could be anything but real, but the friends I saw it with were all very adamant that this was the case.
With hindsight, I find it plausible that the fantasy elements took place entirely inside Ofelia's mind, to help her escape from the harsh realities of her life, and to give purpose and meaning to what was clearly a very forlorn existence. If so, the only thing which I don't understand is, toward the climax, how she really escaped from the room using the door she'd drawn herself out of chalk. There might have been hints which I missed. I guess I need to see it again. |
SOMEONE TOOK THEIR KIDS!??!?!
Dude!!! IT SAYS RIGHT ON THE POSTER. R IS NOT FOR CHILLENS. JEEZ. |
