I just completed viewing the DVD "Prince Caspian" and a marvelous "Miss Marple "DVD.

I enjoy Joan Hickson's portrayal of Miss Marple very much. I have read most of the novels written by Agatha Christie.

Transporter 3

A lot better then I expected it to be. While strictly action orientated, this movie actually had a lot more structured plot in terms of character development. There was much more emotion and personal connection between Frank Martin (The Transporter) and the other characters in the film.

They also toned down the utterly absurd over the top, implausible action stunts from the crappy 2nd movie and kept it down to like....only 2 implausible action stunts. Its pretty good considering this series actually. I loved the musical score and the fight scenes were spectacular as always, even grittier then before.

I loved especially the fight with "The Big One". Very fun movie and a big improvement over the second movie, though I still feel the first film easily tops all 3 as the best one in terms of characters, action scenes, love interest, villain, and everything else.....though I do admit Transporter 2 had a pretty bad ass fight scene with a fire hose.

Hancock

Well, this is very much your typical, middle of the road Will Smith action blockbuster, really. Not exactly the amusing variation upon the superhero theme which the trailers had hinted that it might be, it starts out briskly enough but soon gets bogged down with its attempts at more serious, emotionally-driven drama, which never gets nearly as much development as it requires. The special effects are serviceable, and the references to Youtube straddle the line between being funny and being annoying. If you're in the right mood, then I suspect it'll pass the time, but I wouldn't say that it has a great deal else going for it.

Wow! I'm afraid I've never read even one Agatha Christie novel but I used to love those Joan Hickson shows. She was such a gentle, well-mannered old lady and she always out-smarted everybody. I always thought she's what Dolly, the never-seen sister of Godfrey from Dad's Army, would be like. If by any chance you've ever seen that show.

Lawrence of Arabia

Good lord this movie was FREAKING LOOOOOOOONG! My word, i have never seen a movie this long before, longest stuff I have ever seen are the LOTR movies, Titanic and the King Kong remake and they didn't feel half as long as this movie. My friend brought this movie over and glorifies this movie as like the Holy grail of movies or something.

I don't know, me personally i really did enjoy the film and it was extremely well made and acted and scripted but I just don't hold this film in the same high regarded opinion as my friend. I think most of these critic glorified films are not worth the buzz they build it upon and while this is great, there are films I think are infinitely more amazing that most critics would regard as garbage or juvenile.

For its age and the subject of something I REALLY don't care to see in movies: war and politics, this movie really held up well and I was quite pleased with it despite its length.

Hidalgo

An excellent movie with a mix of action and horses.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

Is it a movie or just a show? Eh, I see it more like a movie. Anyway, I never got to see it last year, and I felt so incomplete. But I saw it this year! I've always loved it. Now I wish I could see all the other shows and movies that make my holiday season feel more complete.

Punisher: War Zone

Nothing like the first in so many ways. It was a very fun and essentially, mindless movie with ridiculously LARGE amounts of gore, seriously. There are heads exploding left and right, throats sliced open and people being blasted into human swiss cheese. The villains looked cool but over acted in a REALLY bad way.

I usually love over acting but here it was just silly and hokey. It was too much like a living comic book, complete with absurdities and strange "BOOM" "BAM" "BIFF" kind of moments. I miss Thomas Jane and the seriousness the first movie held, but action wise this movie is tops, the gun shooting/blasting people to bits was fun as Hell.

Overall this movie was WAY too cartoony for a serious movie like the first Punisher and this will not help anyone's interest in reliving the franchise anytime soon. Not bad, but certainly not great.

"Hancock" on DVD. I thought it was hilarious.

Every time you say "first," you should say "second." Remember the one with Dolph Lundgren?

Unfortunately I do recall of its existence, I was trying to block it out of my mind since I've heard nothing but AWFUL things about it.

Last movie I just saw was...

Prince Caspian: Chronicles of Narnia

Ridureyu 12-14-2008 12:07 AM

I saw the end of it. It didn't look "bad," just not very memorable.

Anyway, Hogfather for me. My avatar!

jekylljuice 12-14-2008 03:37 AM

The Savages

This was a very poignant and well-acted drama about an estranged family which reunites when the elderly father begins suffering from dementia. I'd actually been meaning to see it a lot earlier this year when my downtown cinema was showing it, only unlucky me, I had an essay to write at the time, and they'd had their very last screening the day before I handed it in. So I've had to wait a while for Lovefilm to get it to me on rental DVD. It was definitely worth it though. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys understated character studies - the performances are uniformly strong (Laura Linney is particularly excellent, but then she's great in anything), Tamara Jenkins' direction is haunting and engaging, and the characters are well-rounded and interesting; all quite distinctly flawed, but the film refrains from judging them. This is particularly true of Philip Bosco's characater...though the film hints at several points that he has not been an especially pleasant person throughout life, it does not prevent him from becoming sympathetic in his vulnerability - indeed, this is the basis for the film's arguably most revealing and emotionally unsettling moment.

As is appropriate, the film reaches no easy solutions, but it does close on a very beautiful, highly uplifting and entirely unspoken note.

The Dark Knight
After a second viewing, it has replaced Indy as my favorite movie of 2008 & it is my third favorite movie of all-time. It is simply a masterpiece of film.

Elf = Best Christmas movie.

emperor26 12-23-2008 12:04 PM

Dick Tracy

I caught this movie on the Sci-Fi Channel yesterday. This movie is a blast from the past, and Warren Beatty did a great job bringing the late Chester Gould's comic strip to life, from the environment, the tough detective to its colorful, monstrous villains.

The actors, including Al Pacino, did well for their roles, making those characters enjoyable throughout the films.

Ridureyu 12-24-2008 02:11 PM

What is it doing on the Sci-Fi channel? I mean, I guess maybe because all the bad guys are deformed, but birth defects are not sci-fi....

Anyway!

Fred Claus

Didn't like it much.

The Nativity

Wow. Sure, it was inaccurate in that the Wise Men should have arrived about a year later, b ut... wow. Everything else was... wow. They even made Gabriel accurate, so far as his appearance should have been.

some guy you dont know 12-24-2008 06:02 PM

olive the other reindeer.

I dont care what people think. this is my favorite christmas movie.

...Well, its only like 45 minutes long, but I think it still counts as a movie.

frankie_fan 12-25-2008 08:12 PM

Batman Forever

Got it for Christmas!

I always thought this was a good film, mainly because of Jim Carrey as The Riddler. But I can see why this isn't one of the best Batman movies (other than Joel Schumacher as the director).

Mr. Marshmallow 12-25-2008 11:03 PM

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Can't go wrong with a Christmas classic. I don't think I have ever met or spoken to a person that did not like this movie, its one of the most imaginative, creative, beautifully scored and wonderful movies i think has ever been created. My hero of a director, Tim Burton, truly outdid himself with this masterpiece and I can't wait to share this film with my kids when I get older.

some guy you dont know 12-26-2008 08:47 PM

The Dark Knight

Havent seen this in a while. great movie, in my opinion.

Lynnie 12-26-2008 08:59 PM

Elf

Watched it last night- Christmas night. Ya know, I've never been able to see it from start to finish before. From what I've seen in the past, I enjoyed it, but it was so nice to finally be able to see the whole thing in one sitting. Soo funny! I'm a fan of a lot of Will Ferrel's work, and I loved him in SNL. So I wasn't at all surprised at how much I was laughing throughout the movie. 8D

Tim Burton didn't direct this film. He only wrote the original poem and was the executive producer. He didn't direct his first full-length animated movie until The Corpse Bride in 2005. Henry Selick who went on to do James and the Giant Peach, Monkeybone and the upcoming Coraline is the director of this film.

I know that, I never said he directed this movie I said he's my director hero and even if he didn't physically direct this, its as close to being his work unofficially as you can get.

I'm pretty sure I last watched Wall-E

Holy. Crap. Why didn't anyone tell me this movie rocked back and forth and with both hands?! The graphics were amazing-- Pixar really outdid themselves this time-- and Wall-E and EVE were so cute. I loved the beginning with the song "Put on Your Sunday Clothes" from Hello Dolly-- coming from the daughter of an avid musical watcher, it was a funny touch. (Watch, the next movie I watch is gonna be Hello Dolly...) In fact, I liked all the music.

Gawd, this movie was epic frickin' win.

The Notebook

I've heard so many great reviews about this movie, and haven't gotten a chance to see it until tonight. I really enjoyed it, it was so sweet. Ah, young love. I always love stories about young love. :-* And then when they're old, he reads her the notebook she wrote about their whole love affair to keep what feelings she has for him alive, even in here severe dementia. And although it had a sad ending, it was a complete and satisfying ending. I was left feeling happy.

Before that we watched Independence Day.

I had seen it before once, many years ago. I'm a huge fan of Will Smith. And although it had been so long since I've seen it, I remembered most of it. Especially the fighter jet parts. They reminded me so much of Star Wars, and I remember mentioning that the first time I saw it too.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

National Lampoon's: Christmas Vacation

Farce of the Penguins

I have only 4 words to say about "benjamin button" GO SEE IT NOW! It is without a doubt, one of the best and most tear jerking movies I have ever seen in my life. It is without a doubt truly spectacular.

Muppet Treasure Island

Although this is certainly an entertaining adaptation of the Robert Louis Stevenson (bows in veneration) classic, as Muppet features go this probably rates as one of their weaker installments (of the theatrical films, anyway)...if only because its greater strengths owe considerably more to the input of Tim Curry than they do that of the Muppets themselves. Tim Curry is really what makes this movie - he's utterly fantastic as Long John Silver, and he gets the film's most enjoyable musical number to boot. The Muppets, by contrast, go somewhat short of particularly stand-out moments in this one. Here are a couple of my main observations/reservations:

*) The whole "Cabin Fever" song sequence - very obviously filler, but it's fun enough, so I won't really complain.

*) I can remember a critic commenting that the film appeared to have difficulty accommodating the Muppet characters to the story - to a large extent I agree, and I think that the film itself is quite aware of this weakness, as reflected in the sheer volume of supporting characters who openly comment upon how superfluous and arbitrary their roles are here. It gives the whole thing rather an awkward tone, particularly when contrasted with Muppet Christmas Carol, which did a much more decent job of matching the pre-existing cast with more-or-less functional and appropriate roles.

Oh well. It's still a good film, and it was well-worth enjoying the Muppets' run of big screen adventures while they lasted. After this, there was only Muppets In Space left to go...unless you count Elmo in Grouchland as a Muppet flick, that is.

"You get nothing, You Lose! Good Day Sir!"

Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory.

For pure camp value nothing beats Gene Wilder in a purple coat and top hat talking about evil and danger while various scenes of indescribable things are super imposed over the film.

And to think this was and still is classified as a "Family Film"

Mr. Marshmallow 01-06-2009 11:18 PM

Eagle Eye

This movie is always fun for me to watch. Even though it borderlines real life fears/paranoia, and total science fiction fluff it still manages to thrill me and I never get tired of seeing those awesome over the top car action scenes when they get in the traffic light chase.

I just heard the director of this movie is planning a weird new more "mature" version of jack and the giant beanstalk called "Jack the giant killer". Needless to say I'm more then a little curious to see what this would look like.

Ghostbusters 2

Gran Torino

I actually saw these on Sunday but still. I always felt no one ever gave GB2 more credit, I think too many people ignore it and pass it on simply because it can't match number one supposedly (few films can anyway). But "Torino" OH MAN WHAT A FILM! This is easily the best Eastwood work I have ever seen.

Beautiful story, simply yet effective and pretty damn funny too, great humor in this film and some excellent characters. The acting the writing is perfect as can be and the emotions this movie runs through you are quite powerful and moving. There is a touching story mixed with humor and drama in this film and I loved every bit of it.

Just so you know,. I wasn't complimenting Blood Freak. it's hurt-your-brain bad.
