Aww, no jellyfish? I thought they lived i ntrees. ;)
"california" is really all we know. |
Vlad PLasmius lives in wisconsin, other than that... when did making fun of wisconsin pop up in every single cartoon?
I dont understand (yup im from WI) |
Its actually not just cartoons. It seems really that a LOT of actors (possibly especially comedians) are from Wisconsin; this may hold true as well for writers, so that's why they put that in a lot. No kidding - I had a roommate from Wisconsin once and he hyped the place so much all the time, making fun of California - it really burned me...but after that I always notice when Wisconsin is mentioned on television, and it is a LOT!! It's the darnedest thing.
Perhaps everyone from Wisconsin has a tendancy to make fun of other places and glorify Wisconsin whenever they're visiting/moving elsewhere, so much so that writers just can't HELP making fun of Wisconsin, just for revenge! That roommate of mine was pretty mean about California, and always going on about how great Wisconsin is. Maybe all Wisconsinites, or a lot of them anyways, are like that, and it just annoys everyone. ;) It certainly annoyed ME. |

i just think the other american's views of a wisconsinite is that we all have cheeseheads, live on a farm, and drink a lot of beer well the last one is true (milwaukee is the #1 drinking city), most wisconsinites are just like you normal people... lol cept everyone else says stuff funny, like calling a bubbler a "water fountain":cheese: |
This is getting off-topic. I think. Just one or two posts, but still...
EDIT: Aha, 4 off-topics. Boom. |

I feel obliged to share my feelings on a long dead thread. It seems that primary inspiration in the Pacific Northwest could've been none other than Humboldt County, California. Home to the coast redwood the tallest trees in the world, which are featured rather prominently in opening title sequence in the Foster's yard. Humboldt County's small town atmosphere, cultural idiosyncrasies, proximity to both Hollywood and the ocean makes it the number one candidate for a permanent location if there ever was one. However Imposter's has proven that the location of the entire town is not static as it seemed to saunter its way towards the Canadian Border. That downgrades the entire County as simply a very possible, and probable inspiration.
Also if this wasn't the inspiration for the house, or one of the primary inspirations, I'll eat my hat. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...California.jpg I mean right down to the signage. |

It's an old mansion called the Carson Mansion. Recently it's home to the Ingomar Club, http://www.ingomar.org/
|
Anybody good with Photoshop want to try and shop it to resemble the Foster's Mansion?
|
Wow, that is one spectacular Gothic-Victorian mansion, me likey! *starting to day dream, but then realizes the daydream has nothing to do with her favorite TV show* Eh hem,... Anyway, yeah, I'm wondering too if one or more of the Foster's crew saw that and POOF! The inspiration behind the Foster's mansion!
As for the many who believe Foster's is in the Northwestern US, particularly Washington State, I hereby promise I shall keep my eyes peeled. If I see a little blue blob running around, I will tackle him to the ground and bring him home so everyone can say "Hi" personally. That also goes for a little mop-haired 8 year old boy, a pretty red-head punk rocker, a little old lady with a bun almost as big as her head, a tall willowy amputee, a purple bull and a bird/plant/airplane thing. Although, I shouldn't have to tackle any of them. ;) |
I believe that they live in the Seattle suburbs. Everything that's been mentioned in the show just falls into place there.

I still don't really get a Seattle feel there. And the presence of such large redwoods also point to Northern California.
I guess this is what they meant by just being the Pacific Northwest. It seems that it's more of a hodgepodge of the entire region rather than one specific location. Much like Hey Arnold!, which seemed to take primary inspiration from the Borough of Brooklyn but is actually a major city near the Washington/Canada border. And has plenty of evidence throughout the series to back up such a claim rather than just a random placing done by creators year later. So looks like we've got a Metropolis on our hands if you get my drift. |
Hmmm..interesting.
In my opinion Pacific Northwest would be at most Washington & Oregon...I don't think of California much as Pacific Northwest...maybe Northern =P As everyone said- I think I have to agree with them. Everything points to Seattle area. But I think there's a few things that could come from other major cities as well. |
Well, Northern California is considered the Pacific Northwest according to some. One thing that puts my doubts to Seattle is the presence of snow. From what I remember hearing from some relatives who've lived there for almost 20 years now, snow isn't plentiful in the Puget Sound region.
|
For what its worth, I have lived in California all my life and have never heard of Northern California being referred to as the Pacific Northwest...Just thought I'd say.
|
I was raised in California, I been to Fairfield to visit my cousins and my mom's sister in Northern California. I haven't been near the Pacific Coast though, it were be awesome if the foster's home were near a beach.

But in the show, "A Lost Clause" is the only episode where we really see any snow. And then there's the little snippits of Goo in "Go Goo Go". But it still seems to me it could be in the Seattle area. And then there's "Cookie Dough", where it's cold, windy and rainy in "the middle of winter" instead of there being snow on the ground. Yes, that's Seattle to the "T". |
Like I said most likely a hodgepodge of places all over the Northwestern Region of the United States. I just thought that Humboldt County made a lot of sense for primary inspiration, but in no way the static location. I would also rule out Seattle as static location either.
What I meant by a Metropolis on our hands, is that in comics the city of Metropolis has had the distinction along with other cities of "walking around." Since the beginning of this very decade it's moved from the state of Delaware to the state of New York, no questions asked. And if you take in all the factors it seems the city that Foster's is set in has done that too. Seattle is approximately 1,131 miles away from Hollywood, and seeing as it seems to stress realism more than most cartoons, it's likely that that episode was set in California, as well as Seize the Day. Likewise, Imposter's was set in the good ol' state of Washington. It seems there's enough evidence to support all our claims. However I tip my hat to Newsom and Newsom for building the Carson Mansion. What eye they have for style. Even if it weren't the inspiration for the house, this Queen Anne masterpiece is a wonder to behold. |
Okay, so I was just now playing around with Google Earth, when I looked up Seattle and found this...
http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/1...herringmc4.png Now, I know it's just a coincidence, but think about it for a minute. What if the "Foster's" in "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends" isn't reffering to Madame Foster, but this so called Foster Island? It's the same as saying Seattle's Home fIF, or Brooklyn's Home, etc. Now, I know some of you will reject this theory, but I just wanted to inform you guys of this. |
I've been under the assumption it's in the place I was born... Spokane, WA. Showers in Spokane... Shpoooookane...

I say they live in Burbank, CA, in Cartoon Network Studios. (Does that make sence?)
|

If you want to get even more literal then that you could say that they live in the copmuters that the animators use to create every frame of every episode. ;) (Just joshing with ya.) |
Me and my brother-in-law studied the hints, if indeed...
Goofball's creator came from Canada by train in 45 minutes say maybe the border then that would take them to Bellingham, Washington |
Quote:
Another Washington state town, Grapeview, is found about an hour further south, but has more beach access, and is not as mountainous as Bellingham(more hilly, like what we often see on the show), and it actually DOES have a Wilson Way! Even though it's more distant from Canada, you also have to consider the VERY strong possibility that Goofball's estimations could have been WAAAY off, given that he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer! Either of those towns would be a very good candidate, but either way, I'd definitely say that the show takes place in Washington State. pitbulllady |
There is a Wilson Avenue in Bellingham, but no Wilson Way.
So it just might be Grapeview, Washington. Ah, the wonders of Google earth(R)! |

on Pranks For Nothing when the picture was showing the outside of the hotel there was a sign by the road that said "I-5 Freeway":o |
Quote:
Was it really? I honestly didn't notice that, and I've seen the episode twice. I hope that Sparky can catch that in her screen grabs, but that would totally make sense, being that I-5 runs through both Bellingham and Grapeview. Bellingham is really probably the better candidate, though, given its size, and when I zoomed out, I realized that it does have a rather nice little beach(probably complete with jellyfish), and fits the bill perfectly. It also has Western Washington University, which could very well be where Frankie earned her degree in whatever it is she has that degree in. We can forgive them not having a "Wilson Way", since Wilson Avenue is close enough! By the way, you don't have to put spoiler tags, Mac-a-Lacka, unless it's for an episode that most folks haven't seen yet. pitbulllady |

I dunno, I don't think we're supposed to think the show takes place in a real town. I believe it's a fictional one, so the I-5 could go through/past it. It could be *near* this Grapeview, but I don't think the show is supposed to take place in any real town.
|
But you got to get an idea from somewhere...

There was a new clue in "Pranks for nothing!" Theres a sign outside of the hotel that says Highway 15. Mr. Herriman said that the hotel was several hours away from fosters (can't remember exact number).
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ate_15_map.png Washington and Oregon could both work. This also means the episode "Pranks for Nothing" took place in either Montana, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, or California |
