Generally claiming independence is irrelevant if no other 'seat' (referring to the UN general assembly) recognises it and establishes diplomatic and trading relations. We have an interesting situation developing in Kosovo relating to this over here in Europe.

It would be nice to imagine that the US would treat a fledgling nation within its territory with the care a parent should gives its progeny, protecting it and nuturing it especially given the dark history of the relationship between pre and post Columbian Americans. Chances are though this is some stunt from which someone stands to gain.

actually, bro, i believe there is a recently passed UN mandate which would make this little Sioux Coup legal.

Time will tell where it all goes, but if it takes off you might see Americans hopping over to "Injun Territory" for tax-free fun, like 1920's Havanna

Funnily enough a similar situation was envisioned by Frank Miller in his not-brilliant graphic novel 'Give Me Liberty' but I think it was the Sioux instead of the Lakota. This was also before casinos and tax-free fun were on the agenda of course. If there's economic opportunities there, you could see a 'Free-State' working ok within the US but it would still be completely dependent that which surrounds it.

if they promise low taxes on buisnesses and no unions...i'm thinking US car companies would jump on that BIGTIME. Indians are hardworking, generally speaking, i think if they put the incentives out there buisness will come to them.

BTW Lakota are the westernmost Sioux Indian group
